Best Sites to Run a VIN Check Without Paying
Hey everyone,
I’m currently looking at a used 2014 Subaru Forester that seems to be priced just right, but I want to make sure I’m not walking into a trap. The seller gave me the VIN and told me to “check it if you want,” so that’s exactly what I’m trying to do. But wow there are a ton of websites out there, and most of them either ask for money right away or give you only a tiny bit of info.
Are there any trustworthy sites to check a VIN for free? I'm mainly trying to see if the car was ever in a serious accident or declared a salvage vehicle. I’ve heard about NICB’s VINCheck, but is that enough? Are there any free tools that offer more comprehensive history like past ownership, maintenance, or open recalls?
I don’t mind paying if it’s worth it, but I’d love to know what you all use before spending $40 on a Carfax report. Anyone here manage to piece together a car's history using just free tools? Appreciate any links, tools, or tips.
