Default LS400 flickering intrument cluster problem

I just bought a 1993 LS400 with only 82,000 miles, car is in great condition. One of the problems I'm having is the first time I start the car for the day the cluster doesn't want to light up and none of the gauges work for the first 10 minutes or so, then all of a sudden the needles will flicker and the gauges will start to work and all is fine. The rest of the day I drive the car the cluster works just fine, it's just the first start of the day.

I was wondering if anyone knows a good place to inspect on the back of the cluster or the board, and what to basically look for and at. I am going to take it out tomorrow.

Also does anyone have any cautions I should be aware of when tampering with the board besides grounding it of course.[sm=type.gif]

Default RE: LS400 flickering intrument cluster problem

A lot of people have this problem, and it's not something you can fix yourself unless you have an electronics shop. The dealer won't fix it, they'll just replace the whole cluster and charge you $1400.
I'm having the same problem with my '93, and it's gotten worse each year whenever it gets cool outside. I remember an electrical engineer that will rebuild it for you at a decent cost if you pull the cluster and overnight it to him. I"ve kept his name and email address from a couple of years ago, and I've just emailed him for an update and removal instructions.
His name is Jim Walker 'jimlwalker@sbcglobal.net'.
Perhaps he's still around...
