Default Beware of changing out Puddle Lights on the 460

So I purchased a 2011 Granite Mica LS460 with only 32K miles about 4 mos ago and absolutely love the car! I decided i wanted to switch out all of the factory interior and exterior bulbs for LEDs. Everything went like clockwork until I tried to swap out the puddle lights on the doors. Had a little trouble getting a few of them out and must have shorted two of them out - or so I thought!
Had it at the dealer for an unrelated matter and asked them to look at it, figuring they were going to find a few blown fuses. Instead they told me that I must have shorted out true door ECUs! Each one is in the mid $300 range! + the labor of about $350 to replace them! Wow? Felt really stupid about this one!
Anyway has anyone had this happen and can this actually happen? Any chance of doing this myself if I can find some cheaper ECUs? Or is this asking for trouble? I don't want to do any more damage to my car! Thanks for your advice.
